There was lots of rhetoric about putting Americans first during US presidential election campaigning, but are we seeing it play out in the coal industry?

1,000 is the number of coal industry jobs created in the first quarter of 2017, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, making it a 51,000-strong industry. That follows several years of coal mining jobs declines, from 90,000-odd in 2011. But a 2% increase seems fairly immaterial.
