UK government borrowing surplus falls in February from prior year

The UK’s public sector borrowing surplus decreased in February from the year before, according to the Office for National Statistics on Thursday.

UK public sector net borrowing, excluding public sector banks, was £8.4 billion in February. This was £3.4 billion less than in February last year.

Meanwhile, in the fiscal year to February, it was £106.8 billion. This is £4.6 billion less than the equivalent 11-month period of the prior year. It is also the lowest for four years in nominal terms.

Public sector net debt was £2.659 trillion at the end of the month. This is £157.4 billion more than at the end of February 2023.
