What you'll need

Your National Insurance number – you'll find this on your National Insurance card, a benefit letter, payslip or P60.

Your child’s details – including their National Insurance number, if they have one.

Details of any Child Trust Fund (CTF) or existing Junior ISA you're transferring.

Before you apply, just remember:

  • To apply for a Junior ISA for a child, you must be their parent or legal guardian.
  • Once you open the Junior ISA, you'll be the 'registered contact', responsible for choosing investments and managing the account until they turn 18.
  • If you’re transferring a Child Trust Fund (CTF) to the Junior ISA, you'll need to be the CTF's registered contact too.
  • The value of investments can go down as well as up, and you could lose money for the child as well as make it.
  • ISA and tax rules can change, and the benefits of an account depend on personal circumstances.

What you need to know about Junior ISAs

  • Once money is in a Junior ISA, it can’t normally be accessed until the child turns 18.
  • Once the child turns 18, the JISA will turn into a Stocks and shares ISA in the child’s name.
  • A child can only have one Stocks and shares Junior ISA or Child Trust Fund open at any one time. Do they have a Stocks and shares Junior ISA or CTF elsewhere? You’ll need to transfer it as part of this application.
  • Once you’ve completed the application, it’ll take a few days for the Junior ISA to be set up. During this time, you won’t be able to pay money into the account – but we’ll let you know when it’s set up and ready to go.
