Acacia Mining said it had noted media reports that authorities in Tanzania had issued a fine to its North Mara mine in relation to alleged historical breaches of environmental regulations.
The company also confirmed that it had received verbal notice from the government that it was to be issued with an Environmental Protection Order in relation to the mine's tailings storage facility.
Acacia said two ministers visited the mine on Thursday to meet with its management and review activities related to managing seepage at the tailings storage facility.
The company has been fined by the government before. In January, it announced authorities had fined it 300m Tanzanian shillings ($130,457) over alleged breaches at North Mara.
'As previously disclosed on 8 March 2019, the mine's technical team has been working constructively and collaboratively with the government to try to address concerns regarding alleged breaches of various environmental regulations and alleged discharges of a hazardous substance from the min, Acacia said.
The company said it was reaching out to the government to seek clarification of the latest media reports, including to request copies of relevant investigation reports.
Operations at the mine remained unaffected, it added.
