Stamp duty

A tax that applies when you buy most UK-listed shares online. Its full name is the Stamp Duty Reserve Tax (SDRT), and it comes to 0.5% on the total of the transaction.

This tax applies to all UK-listed shares, except the majority of those listed on the London Stock Exchange's Alternative Investment Market (AIM).

Stamp duty also doesn’t apply when you buy funds (unit trusts, OEICS) or exchange-traded funds. You also don't need to pay SDRT when you sell shares.
