FTSE nears open after Wall St gains, mixed Asia

London equities are set to open after gains on Wall St and a mixed performance in Asia, with Brexit and UK inflation again in focus.

Economic news out today in the UK includes unemployment-related data, while traders are looking to US building permits, housing starts and the Beige Book.


On Wall St overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.42% to 18,161.94, the S&P 500 firmed 0.62% to 2139.6 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.85% to 5243.84.

In Asia this morning, the Nikkei 225 had risen 0.11% to 16,982.48, while the Hang Seng retreated 0.25% to 23,336.81.

At 6.30am, WTI crude was up 0.93% to $50.76/bbl and Brent was up 0.89% to $52.14/bbl. Gold was down 0.09% to $1261.8/oz.


Trading statements are due from Reckitt Benckiser, Rio Tinto, Rentokil Initial and Travis Perkins. Final results are due from Softcat, while interim numbers are expected from U And I Group.
