Book and convenience store retailer WH Smith said its travel business continued to grow 'strongly', with sales improvements recording across all of its channels.

In a trading update for the year through August, the company also said that its high street business performed as expected, with cost savings and margin improvements delivered to plan.

Gross margins in the larger travel business were also in line with company plans and the company's new store opening programme was on track, with hospitals now the second-largest channel in the UK travel unit.

WH Smith said it now had 428 stores open outside the UK and three InMotion stores outside North America: in Perth, Australia; Alicante, Spain; and Leeds Bradford.

'We see good scope to grow InMotion both in the US and internationally,' it added.

'In addition, we see further opportunities to grow our news, books and convenience format in the international travel retail market, where we have a small market share.'
