Advanced materials engineering group Versarien said it had secured the required approval from the European Chemicals Agency to manufacture between one and ten tonnes of graphene per annum.

European Uniokn regulations require all companies manufacturing or importing chemical substances into the region in quantities of one tonne or more per year to register these substances with the ECHA and receive approval.

Versarien had now received such approval for the substance with EC number 801-282-5, being graphene.

'The manufacture and sale of graphene at these levels requires certain permissions under EU regulations and I am pleased to report that we have been successful in our registration and are now accredited to produce significant volumes of graphene under the EU rules for chemical production,' chief executive Neill Ricketts said.
