Acacia Mining said water had inadvertently spilled from its North Mara mine in Tanzania into the local environment, potentially due to theft or vandalism.
The spillage was related to damage to a pipe used to transport water from a polishing pond to a tailing storage facility.
The damage led to a pump being switched off, causing water in the polishing pond to overflow.
The over-spill had subsequently been stopped.
'The mine has welcomed the support of the government on resolving this issue, and is working closely with the authorities to implement improvements to security measures around the polishing pond in order to help prevent any reoccurrence,' the company said.
Acacia also said that a technical team was currently working with the Tanzanian government to address their concerns regarding mine seepage, as previously disclosed on 10 January.
