Ireland consumer inflation reaches 38-year high in June

Annual inflation in Ireland accelerated to its highest level in 38 years, figures from the Central Statistics Office showed Thursday, driven by housing, water, electricity and gas.

On an annual basis, the consumer price index rose 9.1% in June, ticking up from a 7.8% increase in May, and marking the highest increase since the second quarter of 1984, when the annual inflation rate stood at 9.7%.

On a harmonised basis, calculated for eurozone comparative purposes, consumer prices rose 9.6%.

Monthly, consumer prices rose 1.3% in June, accelerating from 0.9% in May. The harmonised index of consumer prices rose at the same pace, compared to a 1.1% increase in May.
